With the 2018 season pretty much over, stories and updates start to come further and farther apart. It is safe to say 2018 was a lost season but was it for Tim Tebow? The former Heisman Trophy winner has been making strides in the Mets minor league system, he was even an All-Star for the Double-A Rumble Ponies. Before being placed on the seven-day disabled list with right hand/wrist discomfort, the 30-year-old outfielder was hitting .273/.336/.399 with 6 home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Prior to his last game, Tebow had this to say about a potential call-up.

“I can’t worry about any of that. I have to stay focused on the process and not the maybes, not the hypothetical, not the what-ifs,” Tebow said. “I don’t think that’s a place that an athlete can live.”

With the New York Mets recent struggles and injuries, it is not unreasonable to assume that Tim Tebow could make his professional debut sooner rather than later. The Mets have been running defensive specialist, Matt Den Dekker, out in centerfield as of late. In six games Den Dekker is 0-17 and Saturday turned into the game from hell for him defensively. The center fielder failed to chase down three to four tough fly balls, resulting in multiple earned runs. Could the Mets be hurt by giving Tebow a chance in September? Especially if Jay Bruce continues to slowly progress through his rehab? Tebow has shown that he is a world class athlete, maybe he can be a diamond in the rough for the New York Mets.

At this pace, I can see Tebow making his debut early on in 2019. He should earn a call to Triple-A Las Vegas before the end of the year, but he still has work to do with his swing. Standing at 6’3” 245 lb, Tebow should be able to generate significant power. He has only hit six home runs this year and has a slugging percentage of .399, his extra-base prowess needs to evolve. Even though Tebow has improved his bat to ball skills, he needs to work on his plate discipline as well. Tebow is still striking out nearly a third of the time. Tim Tebow is showing that he has talent and it will be interesting to see what he can develop into.
